Friuli Venezia Giulia is a region located in the north-eastern corner of Italy, a stunningly beautiful region with an incredibly varied landscape, located between the Alps and the Adriatic sea. Friuli Venezia Giulia is one of the most beautiful and unique wine regions in Italy due to its unique geographical position at the crossroads of north eastern Italy, the Adriatic Sea, Austria and Slovenia has given this region a mixed bag of cultural influences.
Friuli viticulture also benefit from its varied terroir and terrain allowed it to cultivate an astonishing mix of grape varieties. Friuli is mainly known for its white wines which are also called “superwhites” to highlight their uniqueness, with the the native Friulano and Ribolla and the international Sauvignon amongst them, but also the red, from the international Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon to more native such as the Refosco del Peduncolo Rosso play their part in a panorama of of small, high quality family-run wineries. A couple of other native grapes and wines worth mentioning are the verduzzo and the picolit.
